Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
she's the kind of girl who looks for love in all the lonely places;
Name: Demetra Athanasia Jord. Demetra is a Grecian name meaning Earth Mother, Athanasia is also of Grecian origin and means "Eternal Life". Jord is the Old Norse word for the Earth, and is also a giantess and the personification of the Earth.
Nickname: Demi, Mama, Mum, etc
Birthday: March 21st, 1980
Age: 29
Handwriting: Here.
Manner of Speech: Demi can be loud and boisterous or quiet and reserved. Like most things about her, her speech is fun and intense and occasionally betrays who she is on the inside, although her music betrays her far more. Her voice can be very deep or very high, her vocal range is quite spectacular.
Specializes In: Any patient with a predilection toward the arts.
Preferred Method of Treatment: Music and Art Therapy. She has created a program for patients of any kind that show an aptitude in any art to use their creative instincts as a method of treatment.

the kind who comes to poker pockets stuffed with kings and aces;
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 142
Build: Thin but not skinny.
Eye Color: Bright blue
Hair Color: Auburn
Dress Style: Very hard to pin down, really. She wears everything from vintage pin-up style clothing to something that borders goth and punk subcultures to a caricature of something professional, constantly mixing and matching these elements and creating a style all her own. At work, she dials all of it down quite a lot, and though she still looks very unique, she nearly always appears at least quasi-professional. Outside of work, how she will dress is anyone's guess. Often very revealing and irreverent, her style tends to be a lot more pronounced outside of the hospital. Another facet of her appearance that others find distractinginteresting are her eyesbrows, carefully shaved away and drawn on in elaborate patterns every day. They add to her eccentric appearance, along with her haphazard, elaborate hairstyles and obviously meaningful jewelry.
Possessions Usually Found on Person: Several guitar picks, two bracelets, a malachite claddagh, a baroque bird and rose silver bracelet, a black rosary, a St. Jude locket pendant given to her by Kenny, and a vintage, 1920's purse that's just big enough for the real essentials.
Identifying Marks: Since she rarely wears sleeves, you can usually see most of her scars. Terrible needle tracks cover her arms and legs, along with hundreds of tiny razor scars. She had large, straight scars on her shoulder and and hips from a knife. She has a thin, long scar at the bottom of her stomach from her hysterectomy. She also has the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism tattooed all down her spine; the first is almost on her neck and the last dips below the waistline of her pants. She also has the messengers of Odin, Hugin and Munin, tattooed on either side of her hysterectomy scar.

she's the kind of girl who only asks you over when its raining;
Birthplace: New York City, New York
Parents: Dr. Erik Lamont and Mrs. Acacia Calladora Jord
Siblings: Older brother Darien Jord (31) and younger sister Litsa Jord (22). Neither will have anything to do with her.
Financial Status: Upper Middle Class, though you would never know it. See "Notable Possessions".
Current Home: A small bungalow in a lower-income part of the downtown.
Notable Possessions: The reason she lives in a small house in the not-so-great part of town; her Schimmel Pegasus Grand piano, which is also her pride and joy and the love of her life, and worth every penny of the $200,000.00 she spent on it.
Family and Personal History: Demetra Athanasia Jord was born to Erik and Acacia Jord on the Spring Equinox, nineteen eighty. They were overjoyed with her birth, and she was a healthy, happy baby; what could possibly be better? Mr. Jord was the president of NYU, a prestigious position and one that left him very little time for his family, but also that allowed Acacia to stay home with the children. Because she spent so much time with her new daughter, Acacia realized quite early that the baby girl was quite different from any other child she had known, including her oldest son. At only eight months old, the girl was showing the ability to solve simple problems and remember small patterns. Her parents decided to have her tested, and were joyful beyond all belief when the tests were returned; her cognitive abilities were some of the highest the doctors had ever seen.

Immediately, Demetra was enrolled in every sort of baby genius class they could find, she was left listening to Mozart and playing with blocks, and Mrs. Jord was formulating a plan to homeschool her so that they could maximize her potential. As Demetra grew up, her childhood was anything but normal. A constant litany of tests, classes, "games", and music lessons kept her busy from the time she woke up to the time she went to sleep again. The only thing that kept her sane was the grand piano in their den; she would play, sometimes for hours, and her parents didn't mind because it was just another way to showcase her brilliance.

She sped through school, working at a pace that was almost unhealthy, always encouraged and prodded on by her parents. When she was six, her little sister was born, leaving Acacia less time to spend on her. Demetra was highly self-sufficient, however, and just kept racing through school, spending her days alternating between piano practice and homework without stopping. One day, she realized that her parents were only paying enough attention to her to make sure than her grades were maintaining their perfect levels and that her brain development was proceeding as planned. The rest of their attention was divided between her older brother and her younger sister, but she didn't mind so much. She figured that they deserved it more than her because she should work harder, and so she began sleeping less and working more.

By the age of twelve, she had finished High School and her piano was so accomplished that she was accompanying professionally. Her parents spent a year preparing her for the next step in her education, and then placed her in a highly prestigious, private university with a program for young children with brilliant minds. Suddenly, Demetra was surrounded by children just as intelligent as herself, and instead of finding friends and comfort there, she found nothing but a stiff and unyielding competition.

The constant competition wore down at her mind and her body; she barely slept more than two hours a night, and the rest of her time was spent doing homework, aside from the few hours she spent on piano and accompaniment. Her grades began to slip, her teachers began to worry, and in no time flat Mr. and Mrs. Jord were pulled into their office for a discussion about Demi. As punishment for her grades and for causing the teachers to worry and consequently wasting her parent's time, they told her she was no longer allowed to play piano, at least not until her grades pulled up. Demetra wanted to cry and scream and make them understand how horrible that felt, but she couldn't, so she kept her mouth shut and her head down and just quietly agreed.

Without her music, she had no way to dull the pain or deal with the stress. That night, she was working when a sheet of paper cut her finger, and her mind was flooded with the sensation of the pain, and it was complex and made her feel just a little less overwhelmed. Gradually, she began purposefully scraping her knees or bruising her arms, until finally she broke the razor out of one of her father's old shavers and drew it down her hip. Cutting became her haven, her shelter, and soon her days began revolving around those private moments, locked away in her bathroom, drawing the razor down various areas and gasping with the pain and the pleasure, and then feeling so, so much better again. This lasted until her routine physical, where her doctor noticed some of her cuts, and realizing what they were, had a very long talk with her...and then with her parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Jord were furious with her, and in a fit of rage, they had her piano carted off and her music thrown away. They tried to keep her under constant supervision, but she was desperate and searching for anything to help ease the pain. It wasn't long before she discovered heroin.

Her habit was small at first, the drugs given to her by the owner of a little store next to her school, "Free for such a pretty face!" He would say with a wicked gleam in his eyes. But as soon as she was addicted, he started expecting favors in return for his goods, and though she was horrified by her own behavior, she numbed herself to it and gave him what he wanted. It wasn't long before she dropped out of school and ran away from home, only fourteen years old and going from dealer to dealer, lacking any kind of money but giving up her body for that delicious moment of painlessness.

Unfortunately, Demi knew nothing of sex. She had missed all that, only having seen a few movies for classes, only having watched snippets of TV, and only consorting with other children as asocial as herself. She didn't know that you were supposed to use condoms, and the men she was with rarely ever cared. They told her what to do and she did it willingly, desperate for her high. Even after she wised up, she was just a week little girl; her johns nearly always got off on overpowering her. Consequently, she had eight pregnancies in six years, some of her children miscarrying in the first trimester, others living longer, but none past six months. A child simply couldn't survive in her drug-riddled body. She was a junkie, a drop out, and a failure, and her family wasn't even looking for her; she had nothing.

Her eighth and final pregnancy was carried nearly to term, and at eight and a half months, she was taken to the hospital by an ambulance when she collapsed in a grocery store and went into labor. She thought that maybe this time, her baby would live and she could have him, and maybe if she had a baby, she could leave this life behind. But that was not the way it would happen. Her child died shortly after birth, and her womb was so torn apart from all the pregnancies and all the chemicals that the doctors were forced to do a full hysterectomy. When she woke up, they told her the terrible news, and she was already at a dangerous level of withdrawal from heroin; she went ballistic. Crying hysterically, screaming at the doctors to give her back her baby, and give her back her uterus, she was only able to be calmed using sedatives. She kept trying to leave the hospital, but the doctors wouldn't allow it, and the withdrawals were getting worse. Eventually, a deep, dark depression overtook her, and she stopped doing anything at all.

Finally, they promised her some methadone if she would sign herself in to the rehab program there. She couldn't even lift the pen, so they had to, and she pushed it in a squiggle across the paper. She was given the drugs and started on the hell that was weaning off. The first few weeks were torture, nights spent with nightmares about the babies she had lost, the things that she had done; she finally looked at herself objectively and realized the sort of slime that she had become, and it broke her.

After a few more weeks of just laying in bed, losing weight off of her already-skeletal frame and not progressing in her treatment, Demetra was wheeled out to the common area for some human interaction, and they thought that was what she needed. She slowly wheeled her way over to their old upright piano, donated by some church somewhere, and began playing. She was so weak that her arms dropped after only a few minutes of the music, but she was back the next day. As she played, she began filling out, perking up, she began eating again and the transition from heroin to methadone, from methadone to nothing was far less traumatic than the doctors had expected. Six months after she signed herself in, Demi was a different person entirely. With an ironclad will and motivation practically leaking out of her ears, she began applying to colleges.

She hadn't attended school in over seven years, but she was still brilliant and a member of MENSA, so Cornell accepted her without a problem, and she began working on her degree in psychology. She went to class all day only to come home to another litany of online courses and correspondence. She was pulling more in each semester than a lot of students pulled in a school year, and then she would spend her summers working at the same rate. The expenses of her schooling were mostly covered by grants and scholarships, and what she couldn't get in grants she paid for by performing in gritty cabaret shows six nights a week.

Within five years, she had received not only a B.S. in Psychology, but also a Masters and then a Psy. D in Music and Artistic Therapy from Brown. As part of her degree, she wrote an entire therapy program using the arts, music specifically, to help troubled or addicted individuals find their own way through the complicated prisons that their inner demons kept them in. Her thesis was so groundbreaking that she graduated with a job, a combination of internship and full blown residency. It was a phenomenal amount of work, but she still found time to devote herself to her music, keeping up her cabaret shows on the weekends, though she mainly sings and plays these days, and practices piano late into the night.

After three years at her combination residency and internship, she was asked to come to Cheshire. She was worried that they would take one look at her in person (she knows that her appearance isn't exactly 'professional') and dismiss her, but to her surprise, Dr. Madrona welcomed her to their facility with open arms.

just to make you lie there catching water dripping from the ceiling;

Personality: [Jung Typology Personality Profile: ENFJ.] In everything she does, Demi is always in various shades of intensity. She is very rarely dull or commonplace, reveling in the differences she carries like badges of honor. She never apologizes for what she is or what she does, knowing that if she appears to be diminutive, other doctors will take advantage of that. She is somewhat volatile, and can go from being a sunny day to a tornado in a matter of seconds, if you rub her the wrong way.

Nearly everything that she does ties into music in some way, but despite the fact that so many of her songs are sung or played eagerly, there are songs she refuses to play unless she really wants someone to get to know her better. She is somewhat of a conundrum, because she is so open regarding her addiction and the troubles of her past, but so very closed off about her miscarriages and relationships and family. Most people that get to know her see her loud explanations of the heroin thing as a smoke screen to hide her true pain behind.

One thing that most everyone sees of Demi is her nurturing, mothering side. She is very unconcerned about patient/doctor boundaries, and will often pull patients into hugs or leave large red lipstick kisses on their foreheads or cheeks. She seems to end up being a cross between a best friend and mother, which suits her just fine, despite the fact that she usually gets in trouble for it...in her words, she spent fourteen years staying out of trouble and ended up a heroin addict, and now she's learned her lesson.
Outwardly: Demi is loud, fun, talented, beautiful in her own way, a bit of a flirt, full of stories that would make your toes curl, her own person completely, unconcerned with the opinions of others, all over the place but completely controlled. She is interesting, funny, and honest, blunt, and occasionally, if you spend enough time with her, you might catch an eyeful of her brilliance.
Inwardly: On the inside, Demi has a lot more than just a fun-loving personality. She is absolutely brilliant, a genius by any standards, and her brain is often working out four or five things at once. She is also haunted by the demons of her past. Even though she believes that she is absolved of her sins, she can never forgive herself for the children that she lost. Some days are harder than others, and sometimes, if you listen to her singing, you can hear a lonely chord in her voice. She will only share those things with her closest friends, however. Not everyone gets to see how those wheels turn.
First Impression: "I thought I was going to be meeting with a doctor...?"
Quirks/Habits/Mannerisms: Her fingers reach up to brush her rosary periodically, and she never notices that she does it until someone says something. Similarly, she often fidgets with her bracelets and her ring.
Likes: MUSIC. Though that's more of a love...piano, guitar, singing, learning new instruments, helping people, telling stories, listening to stories, anything from the 1920's or 1940's, observing people, shocking people, proving people wrong, writing music, drinking, Catholic churches, Buddhist temples, Irish drinking songs.
Dislikes: Being treated like she is a shitty doctor because her methods are different or being viewed as 'weak' or 'incapable' in any way, people who pry, her family.
Strengths: Her mind is phenomenal, and psychologists who read her papers before meeting her, or talk to her over the phone usually label her as the next 'great' in psychology. When they meet her however, they change their tune. This is why another of her strengths is motivation. She is utterly motivated by the sometimes harsh words of others; without them, she might not try so hard. Musically, she is incredibly talented and could easily be a professional musician. She also has a way with patients because she is so nurturing and so relaxed. She makes an amazing friend.
Weaknesses: Sometimes, when she thinks of her lost children, she gets incredibly depressed. She tries to act normally at work, but any good friends of hers would notice. She has a terrible desire to be right, especially against authorities that are in the wrong. Sometimes she gets incredibly lonely and consequently, very clingy.

She's the kind of girl who gets her slings and arrows from the dumpster;
Introvert/Extrovert: Extrovert
Pessimist/Optimist: Optimist
Faith: A loose combination of "what works for her", mainly derived from Buddhism, Catholicism, and Eastern Mysticism.
Linguistics: Fluent in Spanish, French, and Latin. Semi-fluent in Mandarin.
Eyesight: She wears glasses or contacts, but her eyesight isn't horrible, it just isn't good enough.
Hearing: Normal.
Left/Right/Ambi: Right handed.
Disabilities: None.
Drinks/Smokes: Drinks quite a lot, smokes socially and when stressed.
Physical Health: She still suffers cravings for heroin at times, but she is overall recovered and in decent health.
Relationship status: Single and rather convinced she will never be otherwise.
Sexual Preference: Pansexual with a leaning toward (older) men. In the end, Demi does not believe that she is a worthwhile partner becuase of her past and because she is sterile. The attraction to older men is twofold. On one hand, she is undeniably searching for a father figure but would never, ever admit that. On the other, between her two serious relationships, the older man knew what she was and never berated her for it. The younger left her as soon as he found out, and she is unwilling to engage in a repeat performance of that clusterfuck.
Past Relationships: Since coming off of heroin, she has had several non-serious flings. Her only sexual partners were Dr. Harold Wednesday, a (married) professor that she had an affair with for three years, and Michael Sleepner, an orderly at her previous employment who she dated for one year, also who left her when she told him about her miscarriages.
Best Friends: Aldous Dagmar, Leopold "Butters" Stotch
Friends: Lita Kino, Tyler Durden, Johnny Truant, Ansley Geppetto, Percival Cox, John Dorian.
Enemies: Dr. Queen

the kind who tells you she's bipolar just to make you trust her;
SL's

SL's

The Frigg. [open, m/f] The competition. The Frigg has come into Demi's life and, though she doesn't particularly dislike this person, she does see them as a threat, which makes her very wary of them. They manage to interpose themselves between Demi and her goals, and not only does this make her feel terribly nervous, it also frustrates and angers her. The Frigg activates all of her insecurities and Demi hates that another person can affect her that way.

The Odin. [Dr. Gregory House, [info]greg_housemd]. To say the very least, Demi's relationship with the Odin is complicated. His intelligence rivals her own, but he holds a greater sway than she does, and therefore can seem more powerful. Though Demi likes the Odin, she often becomes frustrated with him, either for being entirely bullheaded, putting himself in harms way or pushing her away. They have much in common, though this can make them clash just as much as it helps them to get along. In the end, Demi truly respects him, though iron sharpens iron, and she's always willing to sharpen her mind against his own.

The Loki. [Tyler Durden, [info]hitmehardjack] The Loki is exceptionally clever. Clever enough to be trouble, and Demi would like to think that was a bad thing, but simply can't. For all of the shit he pulls, The Loki intrigues her, and his nature calls out to the chaotic side of Demi's personality with an almost violent persistence.

The Thor. [OPEN.] The child. Though Demi is naturally motherly to all of her patients and many of her non-patients, this person holds a special place in her heart, more an actual son than just a patient. Though she sometimes holds an unrealistically sunny view of The Thor, they do have a healthy relationship, and Demi doesn't worry when people suggest otherwise.

The Kvasir. [open, m/f] The inspiration. Demi can tell The Kvasir anything that she needs to without risking judgment. Often, she will go to be around him just because it lifts her spirits or makes her laugh. The Kvasir has an intelligence that rivals Demi's own, so she never has to dumb herself down around him.

The Fenrir. [Dr. Roseanne Queen ([info]allwaysmyways)] Generally, Demi gets along with everyone who will give her half a chance. This person? No. Not at all. They are set in their ways, constantly needing to assert their superiority, and absolutely convinced that Demi is a quack and out to prove so. They butt heads constantly, and though they might not necessarily be a bad doctor or person, Demi wishes she had never been so unfortunate as to rub shoulders with them. Essentially, they are her arch nemesis.

The Æsir. [Ansley Geppetto ([info]got_no_strings), Callum Wood ([info]of_mirkwood), two remaining openings, m/f] The group of patients that Demi finds herself watching over. She loves all of her patients, but aside from The Frigg, the Æsir are closest to her heart. She will pay special attention to them and spoil them somewhat, surprising them with gifts as she works to help them get better.

The Baldr. [open, m/f] The jolly, well liked buddy. The Baldr is generally loved for his easygoing nature and his devotion to those around him. Reconciliation is his specialty, and Demi sees him as a source of light and fun. Despite the fact that their relationship isn't as intense as some of her others, Demi knows that she can always talk to The Baldr and he to her.

now its up to you, know what to do, its pretty dirty business;
